Mideo Cruz of CCP Art Exhibit 'Kulo' - Who is this Artist? (Picture)

Mideo Cruz, the man behind the controversial art "Poleteismo" in the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) earned negative reactions from Catholic groups this week.

This is after his controversial arts were posted in CCP "Kulo" exhibit which includes a wooden replica of male private parts in front of his face, a crucifix with a hanging and stretched condom, an image of christ with ink tear drops, among others.

University of Sto. Tomas (UST) through Vice Rector Pablo Tiong also criticized the works of Mideo Cruz. Quoted from the statements of Tiong,

"The University as an academic community and as a Catholic institution would also like to express that it is denouncing the sacrilegious or religious offensive art works included in the exhibit and all other artwork of similar nature. Moreover the said sacrilegious or religiously offensive artworks are nothing but a kind of artworks expected and or produced by unprofessional artist"

  3. Art ba yan????!! If it is, then im not sure if most of the common tao will know what an Art Masterpiece is after all. A work of a toddler is much better to look at and understand than this piece of collage of convoluted sacrilige to our faith as a Christians. If this guy was raised with any respect to any faith at all and in the Philippines, it really is a wonder to me why he thought this is appropriate. To educate our nation?? BS!!! There are a million ways to do so without being INSENSITIVE like that.At times like this,Im still glad that the guardians of our faith and morality are still very much present. After all this is one of the reasons why even though we are a poor and a challenged country, we still have our morals and our values that keep the families and our country intact.tama yong mga nag comme.. feeling artist lang yan at kulang sa pansinin. So sad. Pagbutihan mo next time Mr. Cruz, and maybe then we wil annoint you, we the common people, as an artist.

  4. "I see this controversy as a challenge to both the Filipino artist and the audience. For the audience, this is a challenge to be critical on looking at art and to give out an educated criticism of it. For the artists, I see this as a challenge to be more sensitive to their audience and to be insightful more than just simply being inspired. I see this whole thing as a disruption of the status quo that art is just an expression. I really find that very selfish. Maybe it’s about time we communicate."

  10. The role of an artist is to rock the sensibility of his/her audience. I think he did a very great job in doing this part.
