CCP Art Exhibit 'Kulo' Closed Due to Threats

Due to threats being received by the artists and CCP officers, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) closed the art exhibit "Kulo", Tuesday (August 9, 2011).

The controversial artwork photos and sculpture particularly the "Polytheism" of Medeo Cruz (UST) received negative criticisms from Filipino citizens.

Quoted from the statement of CCP,

"Due to numerous emails, text messages and other letters sent to various offficers of the CCP, and to the artists themselves, with an increasing number of threats to persons and property, the members of the Board of the Cultural Center of the Philippines have decided to close down the Main Gallery where the Kulo Exhibit is on display. This decision was made amidst controversy and deliberation by the Board as to what steps are necessary to avoid future similar incidents. The CCP shall continue to act as catalyst for free expression of Filipino artists. It thanks all those who have, in one way or another, contributed to the dialogue about art, and the different ways it affects society today."

Meanwhile, Medeo Cruz is not yet giving his official statements regarding the issue.

  4. Well it is true that everybody can express their own opinions for art and not all are Catholics. But you could have atleast respected the Catholic religion and faith. The exhibit showing deface religious images is sick. Konting respeto naman.

  5. freedom, if abused, can be very dangerous. freedom of expression should coincide with social obligation. just to be fair with other religion, bat kaya di sila maglagay ng quoran dun at lagyan nila ng bookmark na condom? or imahe ni budha at mukha ng baboy ang ilagay nila? tignan ko lang kung tatagal ng isang araw ang exhibit nila.

  7. 3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me.

4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments
please reflect and pray...Worship the Lord..wroship God and God alone. Dont even bow down to that handmade image.

pero di sila pagbigyan. you got my point here?

buhay. so maraming namamatay sa gutom.

    3. bakit maraming religions?

  10. I see this controversy as a challenge to both the Filipino artist and the audience. For the audience, this is a challenge to be critical on looking at art and to give out an educated criticism of it. For the artists, I see this as a challenge to be more sensitive to their audience and to be insightful more than just simply being inspired. I see this whole thing as a disruption of the status quo that art is just an expression. I really find that very selfish. Maybe it’s about time we communicate.
