Wikipedia Receives 2 Million Dollars from Google


Volunteer-driven reference site Wikipedia boosted its funds to continue it running free after the most profitable internet company. Google donated 2 million dollars.

Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales announced the news via twitter message while Wikepedia foundation just announced it last Wednesday.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google called Wikipedia as one of the greatest triumphs of the internet. This vast repository of community-generated content is an invaluable resource to anyone who is online.” The grant will come from the Google Charitable Giving Fund of Tides Foundation.

The donation will be used in increasing bandwidth and handling multimedia functions.

The donation matched the highest donation made so far to the online information site. Six months ago, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar made the same donation through one of its investment arms.

Google and Wikimedia have worked several times together in the past the most recent of which, is to translate most of Wikipedia entries into more languages.
